About Olive & Page

Olive & Page started as many things do: on a whim of the edge of a thought. Our first run was a batch of eight holiday cards, the labor of which we underestimated by a factor of about four and a half. We finished them, however, and were heartened by their enthusiastic reception by those in our personal email lists. Now, Olive & Page is a growing business, catering to loyal stores and individuals nationwide!

About Letterpress
Letterpress printing (on a Vandercook press) uses essentially the same methods invented by Johann Gutenberg in the 1450s, wherein a relief of the design is made, placed on the bed of the press and inked; paper is rolled over the relief with a hand crank; and finally the paper is put aside to dry. Repeat.

The deep impression of letterpress printing can be felt as well seen, illuminating the uniqueness of letterpress among today's print technologies. Because of the non-digital, hand-made nature of the design, each printed piece becomes a unique work of art, slightly different from even those in the same print run.

Our Paper & The Environment
Starting in March 2007 with three new Birthday cards (B9:Wheels, B10:Stag, and B12: Crown), Olive & Page is printing on 100% recycled cotton rag paper. We were looking for a soft, thick letterpress sheet that was also recycled, and Crane's Lettra fit the bill. Let us know what you think!
